I haven't posted in a couple of days because everything is pretty much the same. John and I met with Dr. Schell (OB), Dr. Chauhan (Perinatologist), and a Neonatologist this morning and we have set a delivery date! My c-section will be on Saturday, June 13th unless the babies decide to come earlier (which hopefully does NOT happen). With taking everyone's advice into consideration John and I decided that the benefits of them staying in for as long as possible outweigh the risks involved in remaining pregnant for two more weeks. Of course this decision was not easy given that a cord accident could happen at any time that would likely take both their lives. Dr. Chauhan mentioned that if a cord accident were to occur and they caught it during a monitoring session it's unlikely that there would be enough time to perform an emergency c-section to save them. We have made it this far and it hasn't happened yet but as Dr. Schell put it, "we're sitting on a time bomb." However, the Neonatologist mentioned brain bleeds with 32 weekers and that pretty much sealed the deal for us. We remain confident that the babies will continue to do well and that the power of prayer and faith will keep them safe inside for just a few more weeks.
Dr. Schell asked Dr. Chauhan if the polyhydramnios (extra fluid) is an advantage in my case because the extra fluid should allow the cords to flow freely rather than be constricted. Dr. Chauhan couldn't give us an answer because in the 17 years he has been practicing he has never had a mono mono twin case with polyhydramnios. He works at several different hospitals and has only cared for a handful of momo pregnancies. There has only been one other set of monoamniotic twins born at this hospital. That family was given the same advice that we just received and decided to deliver at 34 weeks as well.
I toured the NICU today and was able to see several premature babies. They are SO small. There was a set of twin boys that were just born yesterday at 30 weeks (3 1/2 pounds). They were hooked up to all kinds of machines. It was kind of frightening to see but good to prepare for mentally. Our babies are already several weeks ahead of them and weigh a great deal more so they will hopefully need less medical intervention.
All in all we are both really excited to have a date set and cannot wait to meet our little guys. Hunter was so cute yesterday when he visited because he was talking about his little brothers. He was able to see them on the ultrasound equipment during my BPP and one of them yawned. The u/s tech printed a picture for him. He's going to be the best big brother ever!
